Q: i am using the existing framing which has 2x4s laid on side only leaving 1.5 inches of screw depth. What length are the screws?

Q: To be Wildland Urban Interface in CO, we are required to use galvanized steel metal joists, ledgers and beams. Do your hidden fasteners work with steel framing products? If not do you offer a product for that application or would recommend a product?

Q: Used hideaway universal hidden fasteners with Foggy Wharf Trex. But the black color of those fasteners look noticeable and horrible. Can you offer a gray color hideaway universal clip?

Q: Can Trex be installed over an existing 2" x 4" pressure treated wood deck surface?

  • A: Hello Jim45, thank you for reaching out. Our boards can be installed over another surface as long as they are elevated at least 1.5" for airflow under the decking. We would not recommend laying the decking flat on top of another deck. Terrible screw quality

Just finished the decking in my garage. It’s a small project which I thought having hidden casters would be better than having wood splitters from wood screws on a wooden deck. But just like the other reviewers TREX casters are very cheap and break at the head very easily. Out of about 50 or so fasteners about 6 broke and I had to undo a completed panel to get to the broken screw with vise grips. Now I have several fasteners that are sort of loose for fear of breaking any more fasteners and having to undo completed panels to get to the broken screw screws. Well this made my decision on not to do my backyard patio out of TREX materials for fear of breaking down many fasteners. The panels are great it’s just the quality of the hardware that makes this project ify!

No, I do not recommend this product.

Worth the price and effort

These clips are well designed, providing a consistent quarter-inch gap between boards. I used them with and without the fastener tool as I ordered the latter later and didn’t want to wait before starting construction. Definitely easier with the tool. Regardless, the price and effort are worth the look of the finished product - no screws or plugs on the board surface. Great product

Terrible Clip Screws

Whoever decided to change the screw used to apply the clips should be fired! I have screws used three years ago that were removed to add more Trex to my deck and they work fine but the ones that came with the new clips continually snap off just above the thred on the smooth shank. I have snapped half of the screws which makes the clip useless unless I use some of the previous removed screws to reapply the clips. A terrible business decision. Quality control is completely lacking.

Cheap Metal

It's quite obvious that Trex uses the cheapest metals for their fasteners. As another reviewer stated, these screws break way to easy.

Weak screws

I have just finished level 2/3 for my deck and using these hidden fasteners. Out of a 150 box, I have approx 35 fasteners without a screw because that's how many screws have snapped while installing. My drill is on level 2 out of 3.

Poor quality screws

I bought the hidden clips for use on a metal deck. I had between a 10-20% failure rate on the screw. Like other reviewers of this product I am less that satisfied. Your response that the clips are not intended for use on a metal deck is incorrect as I made sure to order and obtain the ones specified for a metal deck. The screws were of subpar quality with so many failures I did not have enough to finish the job.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Over priced and poorly designed.

The screws are cheap and way too short 1 1/4” they should be at least 2” long . Someone needs to come up with a better solution.
